Hot Water Heaters

Like most household conveniences, a good supply of hot water is most appreciated when it is gone. Especially at the end of a tiring day, or during those cold winters.

Types of Water Heaters

There are two basic types of water heater: storage systems and continuous flow systems. Both use an energy source to heat the water. The energy source can be solar, gas, or electricity.

Storage water heaters are heaters where water is heated and stored in an insulated tank where it kept until it is needed. The storage tanks can be made of either copper, glass lined steel, or stainless steel. Continuous flow or instantaneous water heaters heat the water as needed and do not use a storage tank. They can operate on natural gas, LPG, or electricity. They are fitted with controls that allow you, the user, to set your desired water temperature.

Common Problems of Hot Water Heaters

No Hot Water

This is one of the most common complaints for a hot water system. You know that your heater has a problem when it does not do its job of heating water at all.

Water is Too Hot or Not Hot Enough

Next in line is when the water is too hot, or not hot enough. Check first and adjust the temperature dial on your water heater. If the problem persists, call your plumbing professional.Hot Water has a Foul smell or is Discoloured

If the problem is present in both hot and cold water, then the problem is most likely to be with your source water. Minerals can cause discolouration in your water. If the smell and colour are only present in your hot water, then the problem is with the water heating system. One of the smells that you should look out for is the gas smell. If your water smells like gas, turn off the gas supply valve and call your professional plumber.

Water Heater Makes Noises

If your water heater pops or gurgles, it can be caused by hard water sediment build-up or build-up of scale on your electric water heater heating elements. If you hear boiling sounds inside the tank, it can mean overheating and pressure build-up. Call a licensed plumber at once!
