Blocked Drains Ashtonfield

It’s only when our pipes are out of order that you realise just how much we need them.

Our emergency plumbers count on the sinks and drains in our homes to properly perform for our personal hygiene and general cleanliness. Your family flushes thousands of litres of water along with waste, toilet paper and grease down the drain each day.

Why Drains Get Blocked

What are the main causes of this plumbing problem?

1. Grease and Fat

Fatty and grease material mostly comes from the food residues and soaps that are washed down the drain. As the dirty water goes down the drain, the fatty and greasy matter solidifies, and due to their sticky properties, they collect to the walls of the pipe to form a mortar that’s difficult to remove and creates an awful smell. Draining hot water or mild homemade drain cleaner regularly can help in preventing drain clogs.

2. Hair

It may seem too delicate to cause a major clog, but hair build up can create a huge problem for homeowners. If you’re used to shaving in the bathroom and then washing the hair down the drain, then that may be the cause of the regular stubborn clogs. Hair clogs mostly become tough as they combine with other material such as the grease and fat. When the hair is washed down the drain, it collects on the walls of the pipe where it starts building up slowly. Best prevention is to prevent hair going down the drain in the first place.

3. Foreign Object

Most of the common foreign objects that can block the drain system include the nappies, soaps, too much tissue paper, and sanitary items. If you’ve young children in the house, there is the likelihood of them flushing toys and other substances down the drain. Most of them will not block the drain completely but can cause the build-up of other substances washed down the drain to cause a serious clog.

4. Trees and leaves

If you have trees on your property and mostly along the sewer line, then you are likely to experience blocked drains pretty regularly. First, falling leaves are washed down the drain and can cause a build-up in the sewer line and this will definitely result in a blockage. The second and most tough to deal with are the tree roots in the drain. Tree roots may get into your drain by cracking the pipe in search of moisture. Flushing down chemicals that kill tree roots is one of the best ways to prevent their growth into the pipe.

5. Poor Workmanship

The quality of your drain system also contributes a lot when it comes to blocked drains. If the pipes are extremely fragile such as with clay pipes, they are prone to damage that can lead to a blocked drain. In some cases, the quality of the plumber can also be the cause of the problem.

The Latest Plumbing Technology

We use a Three step process to locate the cause of the problem.

Step 1.

Our emergency plumbers insert a small CCTV camera into your sewer or storm water line. The CCTV camera combined with a locating device are used together to provide our plumbers with a visual of the inside of your pipes. It also allows us to see in real time what has caused the blockage and exactly where the blockage is underground.

Step 2.

After our plumbers have investigated the condition of the pipes and have confirmed the location of the blockage, we safely clear the pipes with a high pressure water drain cleaner otherwise known as a jett blaster. In most cases, no further steps will need to be taken. However, should the blockage prove more stubborn, Our emergency plumbers attach an electronic cutting nozzle to our machine to break down the material so it can pass.

Step 3.

If the plumbing problem is more serious for example, tree roots have not only blocked your drain the have caused damaged to the pipes in the process, Our emergency plumbers will provide you with the most cost-effective option to either repair or replace the pipes. Our reliable plumbers will also provide you with advice and preventative measures to make sure that the blockage doesn’t happen again.

Hot Water Systems Ashtonfield

The first decision you’ll need to make is the heating method: electricity, gas, solar or heat pump?

The next decision, after heating method, is whether you go for a system with a tank, or one that heats water as needed. Whatever your need in Ashtonfield, Our emergency plumbers have you covered.

LPG & Natural Gas Hot Water Systems

Natural gas is a good option if you have the connection for it. It’s cheaper than electricity (though gas prices are rising) and because gas rates don’t vary through the day, gas hot water systems can heat water as needed. Most systems use a storage tank, a four-person household needs a tank of about 135–170L.

These systems have an energy efficiency star rating. Both storage and instantaneous systems can have a pilot light, which uses a small amount of gas. Electric ignition is more economical, but in a blackout you can lose your hot water supply. Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) bottles are an alternative to natural gas – but can cost significantly more and you need to regularly order delivery to ensure you don’t run out.

Electric Hot Water Systems

These systems are usually relatively cheap to buy and install, but are often the most expensive to run, especially if it’s on the continuous (full day) rate. Running systems on off-peak electricity are cheaper but require a larger tank as the water heated overnight has to last you all day. Off-peak electricity isn’t available to all homes.

A four-person household typically needs a 125–160L tank for a continuous system or 250–315L for off-peak and can be installed indoors or outdoors. Electric instantaneous water heaters are also available.

Solar Heating

Consisting of solar collector panels and a storage tank. A four-person household typically needs about four square metres of solar collector area (two panels) and a 300–360L tank. You need a large tank to allow for days with less sunlight (or more hot showers than usual).

If your panels can’t be installed in an ideal location, they may be less efficient requiring a larger collection area. The storage tank usually has an electric or gas booster element to keep the water hot on days with less sunshine.

Comparatively expensive and time-consuming to install, but a well-chosen system will pay for itself in the long run due to very low running costs. Government rebates and other incentives may be available to help offset the purchase cost.

Storage tank

Most electric, gas, solar and heat pump hot water systems use a tank. Mild-steel tanks can corrode over time; maintenance every few years can help prevent this. They usually have five- to 10-year warranties. Many tanks have one or two “sacrificial anodes”. This is a metal rod inside the tank which attracts minerals and other impurities that would otherwise corrode the tank; the anode corrodes instead, ‘sacrificing” itself. Get a plumber to check the system and replace the anode every five years (or as per manufacturer instructions); doing this can add years to the life of the tank.

Stainless steel tanks are more expensive, but generally last longer and don’t require as much maintenance as mild-steel tanks. They usually carry a 10-year warranty, but still require occasional maintenance (such as replacement of valves and seals).

Local water quality may dictate which type is best for you; check with the installer. Tanks are insulated, but there is always some heat loss over time, so it’s good to install them in a sunny spot or in an insulated space.

Instantaneous Hot Water Systems & Heat Pumps

Also often referred to as continuous, an instantaneous system heats only as much water as you need, when you need it. Most models use gas, but electric models are available. As there are no heat losses as with water stored in a tank, they’re often cheaper to run than storage systems.

Electric models will use the full electricity tariff for whenever they are in use, so running costs may be higher than for an off-peak tank, but less than a continuous tank system. The size you need (flow rate in litres per minute) depends more on the number of hot water outlets the heater has to serve than on the number of people in the household. As a general rule, for a two-bathroom house you need a flow rate of about 22–24 L/min. Our team can advise you on the right capacity for your home.

They need to be installed in a well-ventilated area – usually outdoors. The compressor on the unit can be noisy, like the outdoor unit of an air conditioner, so you can’t install them too close to a neighbouring home. They tend to work best in warm and temperate regions, but there are models designed to work well in cold climates too, and most systems have a booster element for days of cold weather or high demand.

Roof, Gutter and Downpipe Repair, Clearing and Replacement.

Guttering, downpipes and roofing can last for many years – however, they don’t last forever and, even cared for, they eventually reach their use-by date. If water gushes out over the top of gutters, out from underneath the eaves of the house or is escaping through holes in the walls of the gutters, then you’ll know your gutters and downpipes aren’t working.

Clogged gutters and down pipes, preventing your stormwater from flowing away smoothly, is often caused by leaves and debris from nearby trees. If you have a rainwater collection and storage system, it is vital to maintain your guttering and downpipes. A good start is to clean out missing toys, balls etc and the associated leaf backup they cause in your gutters.

Gutters and downpipes left uncleaned are also prone to corrosion of the metal components. Over time, the gutters eventually rust out and holes occur, allowing water to escape close to the house. This has the potential of undermining or destabilising the foundations of the house.

Our Ashtonfield plumbers can expertly replace gutters downpipes should they have arrived at their use by date.
